PRINCE2 Foundation Exam

Unlike other global professional certification examinations, there is not a fixed PRINCE2® Foundation Exam fee.

Currently the PRINCE2® Foundation exam is administrated through some “Strategic Examination Institutes” of AXELOS (the owner of PRINCE2®) — Acquiros, APMG International, BCS, Learning & Development Ltd, EXIN and PEOPLECERT. These Strategic Examination Institutes has the rights to set their own examination fee structure for the PRINCE2® Foundation Certification Examination. Many of them even require the PRINCE2® Aspirants to take their exam prep courses before even allowing them to take the PRINCE2® Foundation Exam.

According to recent internet search, the PRINCE2® Foundation Exam fee is around US$200, depending on which location you are in. And the PRINCE2® Foundation Exam can be either taken at one’s office/home online through a proctored exam or in local accredited exam centres.

Since the PRINCE2® Foundation Certificate will never expire once earned, it is advisable to take the PRINCE2® Foundation Exam as early as possible in view of the rising PRINCE2® Foundation Exam fee annually.

There is no training requirements for taking the PRINCE2® Foundation Exam. Candidates can either self study using online PRINCE2® Foundation courses or PRINCE2® exam prep book. Many training institutes will also hold classroom face-to-face PRINCE2® Foundation training courses, but the cost is usually much higher.

PRINCE2® Aspirants just need to sign up for the PRINCE2® Foundation Exam at one of the examination providers by paying the PRINCE2® Foundation exam fee and take the exam either online or in an exam centre. If they can get 50% or more of the questions correct in the PRINCE2® Foundation exam paper, they will be certified immediately.

For the higher level PRINCE2® Certification examinations, candidates are required to have gotten the PRINCE2® Foundation Certification (or any equivalent project management certification approved by AXELOS).

Yes. PRINCE2® Foundation and Practitioner Certification Examinations can be taken in many other languages other than English. The PRINCE2® Foundation exam questions have been translated into the following languages:

  • Arabic
  • Brazilian Portuguese
  • Simplified Chinese
  • Czech
  • Danish
  • Dutch
  • English
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Norwegian

  • Spanish
  • Swedish

This list should cover most languages where PRINCE2® project management methodology is in active practice. However, candidates taking the PRINCE2® Foundation Certification Examination in the following languages should note that the PRINCE2® Practitioner Certification Examination is NOT available:

  • Arabic

PRINCE2® Practitioner Certification Aspirants are required to have passed the PRINCE2® Foundation Exam before taking the Practitioner Exam. The good news is that if you are holders of the following recognized project management qualifications, you will be allowed to sit for the PRINCE2® Practitioner Certification Exam directly without having to pass the PRINCE2® Foundation Exam first:

  • Project Management Institute (PMI)
    • Project Management Professional (PMP®)
    • Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®)
  • by International Project Management Association (IPMA)
    • IPMA Level A (Certified Projects Director)
    • IPMA Level B (Certified Senior Project Manager)
    • IPMA Level C (Certified Project Manager or equivalent)
    • IPMA Level D (Certified Project Management Associate or equivalent)

These certifications are considered at the same level or on a higher level than the PRINCE2® Foundation Certification and AXELOS recognized prior education in project management through these qualifications. Candidates should note that only current valid PMI Certifications will qualify as a pre-requisite.

AXELOS allows PRINCE2® Aspirants to take both the PRINCE2® Foundation Exam  and the PRINCE2® Practitioner Exam on the same day. Candidates will only receive the PRINCE2® Practitioner Certificate if they pass both exams on the same day.

For the PRINCE2® Foundation Exam, candidates will need to get at least 50% to get a pass.

But as there are 5 questions in the PRINCE2® Foundation Exam paper that are trial questions and would not be counted towards the final score, PRINCE2® Aspirants would need to answer correctly at least 35 questions out of the 70 marked questions within the 1-hour examination time.

However, as there is no way to tell which are the trial questions and which are not, it would be practical to aim at a minimum of 40 right answers out of the 75 exam questions (i.e. the passing mark for the PRINCE2® Foundation Exam would be equivalent to 53.33%).

For reference, the details of the PRINCE2® Foundation Exam format:

  • Multiple choice — choose 1 correct answer from among 4 choices for each question
  • 75 questions for the PRINCE2® Foundation Exam paper
    • 5 questions are trial (not counted towards the final scores)
    • passing mark: at least 50% for the rest 70 questions (i.e. 35 marks out of 70 remaining questions)
  • 60 minutes duration
  • Closed book — no reference book nor the official PRINCE2® Manual allowed

The owner of PRINCE2®, AXELOS, has published a number of “official” PRINCE2® reference books including:

The first official PRINCE2® book Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2® 2009 Edition Manual, aka PRINCE2® Manual, is the official document for the PRINCE2® project management methodology. Most of the PRINCE2® reference books on the market are based on the content and even the organization of the topics in this manual. It is also the only book that can be used during the PRINCE2® Practitioner Certification Exam. However, just like the PMBOK® Guide published by PMI, this PRINCE2® Manual is a dry read and is difficult to comprehend on one’s own reading this. Many PRINCE2® Aspirants would not rely on this Manual when they are preparing for the PRINCE2® Foundation Exam. But if you aim at the PRINCE2® Practitioner Exam, you must buy 1 printed copy for yourself.

The second one An Introduction to PRINCE2®: Managing and Directing Successful Projects is also published by AXELOS. It is targeting senior managers responsible for a project as an executive role for the first time. Many consider this publication as a high level introduction and overview of the PRINCE2® Manual which introduces the principles, processes and key themes, and gives practical examples of applying them. This book alone would NOT be sufficient for preparing for the PRINCE 2 Foundation / Practitioner Certification Exam.

The third one Passing your PRINCE2® Examinations 2009 Edition is an examination preparation guide for the PRINCE2® Certifications. It provides checklists on what are required in the Foundation and Practitioner Exams and sample exam question papers for both PRINCE2® Foundation and Practitioner Exams. However no updated has been made for this book in 2013 following a change of question numbers / marks for the Practitioner Exam. This book is now considered obsolete.

Aside from the official study guides for the PRINCE2® Foundation and Practitioner Exam, many training institutes have published far more useful PRINCE2® study guides that can really help PRINCE2® Aspirants to prepare well for their certification exams as the instructors are experienced in helping candidate to study and pass the PRINCE2® exams. My recommendation is PRINCE2® Study Guide by David Hinde which explains the PRINCE2® knowledge in much clarity with many practical application examples.
