Do you need to be a project manager to apply for PMP Certification?

I am currently a business analyst, but also worked as a project coordinator. I have led a few projects where I have demonstrated the 5 required areas of Project management and was wondering, if I need to already be in a project management role to write my PMP Certification.

Thank you for your time.

Hi Manahi,

PMI requires the PMP candidates to have substantiate project management experience (leading and directing projects) in all the 5 project management process groups in order to be eligible for applying to the PMP Certification. There is NO need for the candidate to bear the title of “project manager” or the like.

You can be a project coordinator, project staff, manager, leader, whatsoever as long as you actually bear the “project leader” role (i.e. leading the project). According to your description provided, you are most likely to satisfy the working experience type requirement of the PMP Certification. And depending on your education level, you will have to have earned:

  • (for four-year degree or equivalent in any discipline) 3 Years of working experience with at least 4500 hours
  • (for secondary / sub-degree in any discipline) 5 Years of working experience with at least 7500 hours

Wish you PMP success!
