[Free Download] PMP Certification Resource: PMP ITTO Mind Map (PMBOK Guide 5th Edition)
Mind maps are effective tools to help learners understand and memorize difficult concepts and associations. Kim Synder, PMP®, is so kind to share, with fellow Project Management Professional Certification (PMI PMP®) aspirants, her PMI PMP® Certification ITTO mind maps based on the PMBOK® Guide 5th Edition which was prepared during her PMP® exam preparation. This set of mind maps are also ideal for CAPM® exam preparation.
PMBOK® Guide ITTOs for the PMP® Certification Exam
To many PMP® aspirants, the PMBOK® Guide is a dry read involving tons of details as well as well as their relationships, in particular the dreaded “inputs, tools & techniques and outputs (ITTOs)”. Some may try to memorize the ITTOs words by words, but more find that reading the ITTOs alone is overwhelming, let alone trying to memorize them. Every PMP® aspirant would have the nagging question of whether to memorize the ITTOs or not during their PMP® exam preparation.
A helpful way to understand associations and relationships of discrete concepts and facts is through the use of mind maps. In case you haven’t heard of mind maps before, according to Wikipedia,
A mind map is a diagram used to visually organize information. A mind map is often created around a single concept, drawn as an image in the center of a blank landscape page, to which associated representations of ideas such as images, words and parts of words are added. Major ideas are connected directly to the central concept, and other ideas branch out from those.
The major benefit of mind maps is to tap into the strong visual memory of human by stimulating the right brain. Reading plain texts alone would require the left brain only and the right brain is shut off. Through the use of visuals, color, images, graphics, symbols, space, etc., abstract concepts and discrete facts are visualized in mind maps which can be memorized more readily. One can make use of both the left and right brains to “feel” and memorize the concepts, it is just like doubling one’s mental capacity instantly. The best part is that the concepts learnt in this way will retain in the brain much longer. In fact, scientific studies have been carried out to prove the effectiveness of mind maps, in one study, 80% of the subjects thought “mindmapping helped them understand concepts and ideas in science”.
It seems that mind maps are perfect tools to understand and memorize PMP® ITTOs. However, making mind maps would take a lot of time and efforts. And there are also considerable skills involved. Few PMP® aspirants would have the time and skills to tackle this ordeal.

After All, Do PMP® / CAPM® Aspirants Need to Memorize ITTOs?
This should be one of the most frequently asked questions (FAQ) of the PMP® Exam. Every PMP® aspirant want to know whether it is necessary to remember all the 600+ ITTOs for the PMI PMP® exam.
According to my (and many other PMP® aspirants) PMP® exam experience, you will get below ten questions asking you directly about ITTOs (for example: which is not an ITTO for a certain process). But many other questions may require your understanding of the ITTOs indirectly. Therefore it makes sense to at least go over the ITTOs for a few time to “assimilate” as much of them as possible into your memory as possible. Learning the ITTOs by heart will surely help you to pass the PMP® exam with more confidence!
For CAPM® exam takers, the ITTOs represent a large percentage of questions as the CAPM® certification exam is more centered around the PMBOK® Guide. It would be helpful for CAPM® aspirants to memorize the ITTOs to pass the CAPM® exam. The mind maps would be a definitive tool.
