Ways to Get Free PDU for PMP and PMI-ACP Certification
PMI requires PMP and PMI-ACP® Certification holders to obtain at least 60 PDU / 30 PDU respectively for each PMI / PMI-ACP® re-certification cycle (i.e. 60 PDU for PMP Certification in 3 years / 30 PDU for PMI-ACP® in 3 years). There are ways to earn PDU other than spending money on project management training courses in order to meet the PDU requirements for re-certification. Below listed the information of free / low-cost PDU opportunities.
Note: Once you have accumulated all the required PDUs, you will be allowed to renew your PMI Certification right away. Don’t worry, the new certification cycle will begin from the original expiry date of the current certification cycle (not from the date of renewal).

Learn More About PDU Categories
PDU (Professional Development Units) are awards based on the efforts (amount of time) spent on continuous education / service. Usually, 1 PMP PDU equals 1 hour of participation in the PDU activity and PDU can be reported in the multiple of 0.25 PDU. There are 6 categories of PDU in which the education (e.g. courses offered by PMI’s R.E.P.s, chapters and communities) is the most readily accepted PDU category as PDU offered by such education programmes have been pre-approved by PMI.
It should be noted that PDU for PMI-ACP® is also applicable to PMP Certification holders while the reverse is not often true. PMI-ACP® needs to take project management education related to Agile in order to claim the PDU while PMP just needs general or Agile project management education. It is therefore advisable to get PDU eligible for PMI-ACP® first if you are both PMP and PMI-ACP® certified.

Hi Edward, I m Natalie. I m certified PMP last year. Could you share how to earn the PDU60 in order to maintain my PMP certification?
Sure, you can refer to this post which includes ways to earn all the required PMP PDUs:
https://edward-designer.com/web/ways-get-free-pdu-pmp-pmi-acp/
Thanks!
Hello Edward,
Thanks for putting this all together.
I am certified PMP and plan to prepare for PMI-ACP. Can I use PDUs gathered for PMP (36) in PMI-ACP as well ? or do I need to get those 21 PDUs separately for PMI-ACP ?
Sorry, as PMI-ACP is about Agile, the Contact Hours gained from PMP Preparation is not valid for the PMI-ACP Exam. You are highly advised to get the required Contact Hours via the Agile PrepCast which I used to help me pass the PMI-ACP Exam. Wish you success!
I didnt know where to post this comment but i want to say a big thank you for the information on this website. I passed my PMP exam on December 5,2019 with my 3rd attempt. The information i got from this site was very invaluable to my passing the exam! Thank you so much…
Your hard work paid off! Congratulations!
I cleared my exam yesterday with all the domains above target. I truly have to thank you Edward for this valuable asset provided. It helped me a lot from the initiation till the closure of my PMP certification project. Many thanks.
Congratulations! You deserve it!
Hi Edward,
First of all a big thank you for creating this website and continually using your energy, time and resources to keep adding articles which have benefited the community a lot. I doff my hat to you! I had referred to your website several times while studying for PMP and found it extremely informative that I made a promise to thank you from the bottom of my heart for it after I had got PMP certified. I even used some of the question banks listed on it before clearing my PMP.
Having cleared my PMP, I do have a question on recording PDUs. I had attended a PRINCE2 course(Foundation + Practitioner) from the same REP for PMP and have got the PDU certificate totalling 27 PDUs which I will be claiming towards my PMP CCR.
In addition, I recently wrote and cleared my PRINCE 2 Practitioner exam. Can I claim that as additional PDU towards my PMP CCR? If yes, how many PDUs can I claim against my PRINCE 2 certification?
I would be obliged if you could answer when you get time.
Cheers and once again thanks for this website and all the articles!
Congratulations on passing the PMP ! Yes, the PRINCE 2 preparation time (not the certification itself) can be reported as PDUs as long as you provide valid proof of using the time for studies. PMI will reason with you for the eligible PDUs you can claim.
I got my ITIL and AGILE before PMP. Can I use them for PDU?
Sorry, one can only claim PDUs for activities done after getting PMP certified, not before.
Hi Edward,
question, do I have to earn exaclty 25 PDUs under category “Giving back” or I can compensate it with Educational PDUs? Example, can I have 52 PDUs in Education and 8 in Giving back, to get PMP cert renewed?
Thanks!
Hi Bruno,
Earning PDUs under “Giving back” is not mandatory. You can even earn all your PDUs through Education only. Thanks!
Hi,
May I know how the “$1 for 1 PDU” works?
For example, when I choose ITIL®-Foundation (25 PDUs) and paid $25.
What will happen next? What is the procedure and process to earn the PDU and to renew my PMP?
Please help to advise.
Thanks!
David Thong
You will need to go through the whole course to earn a certificate of completion. Then you will have to report the PDU yourself on pmi.org
dear edward, i found your site to be very resources full when i studied for the PMP exam and now I have found it again, as I am preparing for the ITIL certification(self study). just wanted to say “THANK YOU!” for the great job you did with sharing your experience. All my best!
Thanks a lot for your compliment. Wish you certification success!
hi,
can i get a pdf copy of your itil v3 study note? thank you
The registration to the PMI Information Systems Virtual Professional Development Symposium 2014 is closed too.
