What is SEO?

SEO

Summary: SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. This post explains what SEO means to the current state of the internet.

Wikipedia defines SEO as

the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s “natural” or un-paid (“organic”) search results.

However, with the rapid changes in the landscape of internet, this definition is not adequate in describing the scope of work carried out by capable SEO practitioners. SEO is not just changing the codes according to some best practices and purchasing some outbound links to increase the rank score of the website/web page as in the past. Traditional time-honored methods of SEO account for less and less weight with the ever-changing search engine algorithms and behaviors of netizens.

Today, SEO is more about enhancing the total influence and reach of the website or the web page in the internet landscape. The illustration below by gShift lab summarizes the various channels modern SEO must utilize to fully charge the web presence of a website or web page. As we can see, the content marketing/management plan is the most important channel to improve search engine ranking.
