ITIL v4 vs ITIL v3 Foundation Exam:What’s Different?
Recently, many Aspirants of this blog question me whether the ITIL® v3 Exam will be discontinued in 2019. And they are at a loss of whether to begin their own ITIL® Foundation exam prep.
Article Highlights
ITIL® v4 in 2019
Yes, ITIL® will see an update in 2019 from v3 to v4! The update will be published in the 1st quarter of 2019 and the new ITIL® v4 Exam may be activated later on.
But it is now know that the if you get ITIL® v3 certifications now, they will remain valid following the update. Plus the credits towards higher certification levels will still be honoured for up to 1 year!
Major Changes in ITIL® v4 vs ITIL® v3
ITIL® v4 adds to ITIL® v3 some new techniques to assist IT Service Management to a new height of efficiency and effectiveness. ITIL® will now be aligned more closely with other IT methodologies e.g. IT4IT, Agile, DevOps, Lean, etc. so that ITIL® and other development methodologies can work together to achieve synergy. It is a change in approach and philosophy to IT service management.
ITIL® v4 advocates:
- communication
- collaboration
- focusing on value
- simplicity and transparency
And the ITIL® v4 will be much customizable and flexible in its implementation.

Is ITIL 3 foundation still worth to take
Hi Jacob,
I would highly advise to take the latest exam version for your career growth. Wish you success!
So, when will ITIL v4 exams be available? I only has found exams for version 2011 for outside US.
Sorry, I am also waiting for the official announcement at the moment.
Has the ITIL v3 exam been officially retired now?
Almost. If you prepare for the ITIL Exam now, highly recommended the ITIL 4.
Wish you ITIL success!
FYI updated V4 is finally due out Q1 Jan-Mar 2019
Thanks BOb for the update!
Edward,
I just started reading your study notes to augment my ITIL Foundation exam prep efforts. Thanks for sharing your experience with the world / me.
I think Axelos is adding some DevOps and Agile topics into the curriculum later in 2018, maybe October? I hear that test questions may not change until at least December 2018.
To me, that just means I am focusing on taking the Foundation exam well before that time. Don’t take this as gospel, I just have heard it along the way.
Cheers,
Geoffrey Barnes, Sr.
Thanks for the news. I did not know that actually. Hope more details will be available soon.
Anyway, I am sure you will get ITIL foundation certified well before the change. Wish you ITIL success!
I recall that the itil foundation used to cost around £150 about 7 months ago. PeopleCert now want £330 to book the exam. I could spend that total amount to be MCSA Server qualified. What a rip off. This has put me off this certificate completely.
this price is totally ridiculous… it would cost more to get the ITIL Foundation than my CompTIA Security+!!!!
